When it does happen, I create a new disk image and keep the old one around. I can count the number of times that this has happened on one hand.
The low risk option is to simply create a new disk image. Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the capacity of the drive (s) it backs up. The data is intact and I can create a new volume from it but SuperDuper refuses to write new data to it and the next morning the message is prominent in my Growl notifications. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. There are times when SuperDuper refuses to use the disk image. SuperDuper’s features are that it can make reliable bootable backups and has a built-in scheduler to keep your backups up to date.
